Global Mothers, Global Daughters

Global Mothers, Global Daughters is a film about the relationships between mothers and daughters, the meaning of home, the shifting and expanding notion of cultural identity, and the universal wish to raise strong, happy, and fulfilled young women no matter where we come from.

This film began as a project of curiosity and interest about new friends I had been lucky to gain through my children’s school and life activities. As we navigated the growing up of our young daughters, I often reflected on what it would be like to raise my own children in a country and culture that was different from the one in which I was raised. Having lived and worked in various countries before kids I understood the intercultural navigation required as a single person living abroad, but could only imagine the nuances of also raising children.  My friends here were doing this very thing every day … and I wanted to learn more.

So, what began as a curiosity turned into a labor of love as I navigated filming and editing for the first time. What came from the 8 hours of footage were in fact multiple stories, but the17 minutes you find here naturally rose to the top as the themes were recurring.

A story of light and hope that proves, no matter where we come from, we all want what is best and right for our daughters in a world that is constantly challenging our sense of self. A world that can accept and reject us in an internet minute because of what our name is, where we come from, or what we eat for lunch. A world that is at once small yet vast and dynamic in every way.

Our life experiences may be different but our hopes for the kind of future we wish for our daughters is not that different at all.
